Makapu'u Lighthouse is one of Hawaii's most familiar landmarks commanding a spectacular view of the Windward side of O'ahu. The lighthouse was built in 1909 and automated in 1974. A 2-mile paved trail leads to the lighthouse and a fantastic view of the entire coastline and the island of Molokai in the distance.

As you walk up the fist part of the trail you will be able to see Koko Head Crater on the left and Sandy Beach.

Notice Ximena's new shoes....

The first part of the trail is easy to walk and the whole trail is paved. the area is semiarid with little vegetation and almost no tree cover. So bring a hat and plenty of sunscreen.

When you reach the first bend on the trail, lookout towards the southeast and on a good day you should be able to see some of the neighboring islands of Oahu.

By now the gentle trade winds should be a welcome relief from the first part of the trail. Continue up the trail and you will find two lookout platforms.
From here you will have a beautiful view of Rabbit Island, Makapu'u Point Lighthouse and Makapu'u Beach Park.
The views are worth the walk.
Time to the top of trail is around one hour at a leisurely pace.
The Makapuu Tide Pools are in our plans for a future hike.... :)
