Hiking Adventures 2009

Kaau Crater, Jan 4th

On the best of days, the climb up the ridge to Kaau Crater is an aerobic experience.

A very muddy trail added to the adventure and separated our crowd of 15 into smaller groups which eventually came together again at the crater's edge, mostly.

Noland and his family were with us, and a new member, Susanna.

Troy ventured down into the crater and found it mushy and tangled.

About that mud: Did you know that there's a reason it felt so sticky? For many centuries the dust of the Gobi Desert has blown across the Pacific and settled in the mountain crannies of Hawaii as clay. Palolo seems to have collected much of it. The Hawaiians called the soil "crazy" because of its stickiness, hence "Pa-lolo."
